On Wednesday last week, three of our seniors participated in the virtual Upstate JSHS competition, sharing their research from last summer. Having placed highly at the local fair in early February, Jake Egelberg and Jonny Ecker presented their research over the phone to three judges, competing against eight to nine other students each, from all around the state. Joshua Berenbaum presented his research via a submitted poster.
Wednesday concluded with Jake Egelberg winning first place in General Biology. Then on Thursday, Jake presented his work again to a new panel of five judges in a Zoom conference. Ultimately, Jake won third place overall in the state and won a $1000 scholarship from the US Army, Navy, and Air Force. Further, Jake gets to compete at the virtual National JSHS competition in April with a poster presentation. Jake’s work on antibiotic resistance brings us closer to better understanding the rise in increasingly ineffective antibiotics and paving the way to reversing the trend. We couldn’t be more proud of him and all the work he’s done over the past four years.
